#40: Ankle-Biter

In the past, the term ‘ankle-biter’ was a slang term for mischievous little kids. Originating in informal English during the mid-20th century, ‘ankle-biter’ conveyed a playful yet somewhat derogatory description of mischievous or unruly children. The term likely derived from the image of small children being at the perfect height to nip or bite at someone’s ankles, reflecting their tendency for causing trouble or annoyance.

We all know those kids! To be fair, most kids are like that to some extent. Does that make all kids ankle-biters? Whether used affectionately or with exasperation, ‘ankle-biter’ characterized youthful energy and mischief, capturing the challenges and joys of parenting or interacting with young children.
