Motorcyclists, Adeline and Augusta Van Buren, 1916
Things haven’t always been as progressive as they are right now… Back in the day, women weren’t given the same rights as many women in the world have today. But that didn’t mean that some women didn’t work very hard to try and work against them. Even if it meant getting numerous fines for wearing pants instead of “appropriate” clothing, sisters Adeline and Augusta lived according to their own set of rules.

In 1916, when it wasn’t very common for women to own motorcycles, let alone know how to ride bikes, these two sisters decided to bike their way around America, becoming the first women to ever do so. Despite the many hindrances and stops along the way, this powerful and revolutionary sister duo paved the way for women’s rights in America.
