A Surprising Transformation
This charming snapshot of the famous clown Lou Jacobs shows just how engaging he was as a performer. In this 1941 photograph, several children watch him put on his makeup and become a clown. He was always “on” and willing to entertain kids, even when he wasn’t technically on the clock.

Jacobs toured with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus for over six decades. His silly, goofy clown character was a staple of the circus. Obviously, his goofy expressions and makeup were popular among kids. This photo is a nice reminder that clowns aren’t always super creepy. The classic clown character really is just silly and charming.
