Elephants at Work
Elephants were a big part of any circus act back in the day. These majestic animals were trained to perform routines and tricks that delighted audiences for decades. Elephant acts went out of vogue as more and more people became aware of animal abuse and mistreatment, but they’re still a symbol of vintage circuses for most of us.

This vintage image shows elephant trainer Walter McClain and six of his elephants practicing a show routine. Oh, and three women just happen to be sitting on the elephants’ trunks. No big deal! We’re not sure if these women are performers or random spectators who jumped at the chance to interact with these elephants. They all look like they’re having a blast.
