#17: The American Lean

This is a fun fact that you probably didn’t know about yourself. Apparently, Americans are pretty easy to spot when abroad. No, we’re not referring to our love of American flag tees and flip-flops, although those are pretty obvious markers. Rumor has it that Americans have a distinctive lean that is easy to spot.

Some say this lean is a stance that involves leaning on one foot while slightly sticking the other one out. Others think the “American lean” is simply referring to the fact that we tend to lean on things when standing still. Apparently, leaning on walls and stuff is a distinctly American characteristic. It’s so obvious that the CIA has to train the habit out of people. Next time you’re abroad, don’t lean on anything if you’re feeling self-conscious. People will notice you even more.
