During World War II, many everyday items were rationed or in short supply, and stockings were no exception. With silk and nylon stockings in short supply, women had to get creative if they wanted to achieve the desired look. One popular solution was to paint on stockings using a mixture of makeup and water.

This allowed women to create the illusion of stockings without actually wearing them, and it was a way to save valuable resources for the war effort. And while we may take for granted the abundance of fashion choices available to us today, it’s important to remember the sacrifices and creativity of those who came before us.
