Lead Face

The practice of using lead-based cosmetics to achieve a paler complexion was quite common in Europe during the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. The idea was that a pale complexion was a sign of wealth and status, as it indicated that a person didn’t have to spend time working outside in the sun.

To achieve this look, people would apply a mixture of white lead and vinegar to their faces, creating a thick paste that was then left to dry. This would result in a very pale complexion, as the lead would create a white, powdery finish on the skin. However, what people at the time didn’t realize was that lead is a toxic substance that can be absorbed through the skin and cause serious health problems.
