Music Policies in North Korea
During Kim Il-Sung’s era, jazz was banned, and only ideologically aligned music was allowed. His heir, Kim Jong-il, showed leniency, introducing Western music and mandating accordion proficiency for teachers, highlighting the instrument’s cultural significance in North Korea.

The Moranbong Band, also known as the Moran Hill Orchestra, is a notable North Korean musical group. Kim Jong-un selectively formed them, and they performed exclusively at official events and made televised appearances. They represent a modern facet of North Korean culture.
