Spending His Last Days With Family
In the waning days of Al Capone’s life, in 1946, medical professionals made a shocking assessment, likening his mental capacity to that of a 12-year-old. Those who had once known the formidable gangster now saw a man who had been reduced to a mere shell of his former self. His brain had deteriorated completely, leaving him nearly unrecognizable, physically and mentally.

Capone spent his final years with his family, including his wife and grandchildren, in Palm Island, Florida, as the relentless progression of syphilis continued to erode his cognitive abilities. Despite the expectation that he might meet a violent end, Capone’s demise came in a more subdued manner, as he suffered a heart attack on January 25, 1947, at the age of 48, following a stroke a few days earlier.
