#19: Production and Expansive Use

The Douglas SBD Dauntless, a versatile and widely used aircraft, found its way into the hands of various branches of the American military during World War II. The Navy, Marines, and Army all operated this aircraft at different points in the conflict. Its reach extended far beyond U.S. borders, as New Zealand’s Air Force deployed the Dauntless in the Pacific, and various French forces also utilized it.

Production of the Dauntless began in 1940, just before America entered into the war, with its maiden flight taking place in May of that year. From 1940 until 1944, 5,936 Dauntless planes were manufactured, underscoring its significance as a workhorse of the Allied forces and its enduring legacy in the annals of aviation history.
