Neil Patrick Harris dated actress Christine Taylor from 1997 to 1998, a relationship that ultimately helped him understand his true sexuality, as he shared during a 2008 Howard Stern Show interview. In 2004, Harris began dating David Burtka, a connection he detailed on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

On June 24, 2011, after New York’s Marriage Equality Act passed, Harris and Burtka announced their engagement on Twitter. They revealed they had proposed to each other five years earlier but kept it private until same-sex marriage was legalized. The couple welcomed twins via surrogate—Gideon Scott and Harper Grace—on October 12, 2010.
