When asked where they’re from, Americans often specify their state of origin, a practice that can perplex individuals from other countries. Responses like “I’m from Chicago” or “I’m from Western New York” are common among Americans but can seem remarkably detailed to those unfamiliar with U.S. geography.

While this habit reflects the strong sense of state pride and identity within the United States, it can confuse international audiences. Simply stating, “I’m from the U.S.,” might be a more straightforward response, but the inclination to identify with a particular state is deeply rooted in American culture and reflects the country’s diverse regional identities.
