While filming City Heat (1984), a buddy cop film co-starring Clint Eastwood, Reynolds was accidentally hit in the face with a metal chair during a fight scene. The impact broke his jaw, leaving him unable to eat solid food for months.

He lost a dramatic amount of weight, and tabloids falsely speculated that he had AIDS, a damaging rumor at the time. Although he recovered, the weight loss affected his appearance and career, making him look frail and unrecognizable compared to his peak years.
