Looking up to him

Famous around the world, the statues of Easter Island, in the Southeast Pacific Ocean, were carved between 1250 and 1500 CE by the local Rapa Nui people. Called the moai, they are actually full-body statues, rather than just the heads we see poking above ground.

When you see them up against the men in these pictures they look all of their average 13 feet. There are 1000 of them on the island, and the tallest is 33 feet, weighing in at 82 tons. It’s almost impossible to believe that they were carved by hand!
