#42: Giant Pile of Sand
Located in Southern Africa, this coastal desert is well named. It’s called Namib, which means “vast place” in Khoekhoegowab. Many of the dunes reach a thousand feet, and the desert itself is enormous, covering over 31,250 square miles. If you’re going to be terrified of something gigantic, this is an excellent choice.

I doubt anyone would disagree that standing at the bottom of millions of pounds of sand is petrifying. Even those that don’t suffer from megalophobia would be wary of traversing the edge on foot. Maybe this is why the region is primarily uninhabited. It’s also considered one of the oldest deserts in the world.
