#31: Taking Matters Into His Own Hands
The story of the author’s great-grandfather is a heartbreaking reminder of the harsh realities faced by many in the early 20th century, particularly those who were poor. Growing up in Italy, he suffered from a serious infection in his arm that would have killed him if left untreated. Unfortunately, due to his family’s lack of means, he was unable to receive the medical attention he desperately needed.

But even in the face of this adversity, he refused to give up, and he had to get creative. At the age of just 14, he and a few friends took matters into their own hands, using a bottle of liquor, a tree stump, and an axe… there’s no need to spell it out. While this act was undoubtedly painful and traumatic, it ultimately saved his life.
