“1979” is a popular song by American rock band The Smashing Pumpkins, describing the coming-of-age story of Billy Corgan, the band’s lead singer. The song was written in 1996, but it looks back to the time Corgan was a young teenager. There’s something about the year 1979 that sounds very nostalgic and romantic, isn’t there?

However, there’s nothing romantic about the year 2004. It’s nostalgic for some of us, but not nearly as much as 1979. The seventies were a unique decade, associated with roller disco parties, hitchhiking, hippies, and a surge in women’s rights. It was a special time.
