11. Questionable Ice Cream

Ahh, summer! The perfect season to unwind, explore new places and enjoy some refreshing ice cream. It’s hard to imagine a bad ice cream flavor, right? But did you know that in the 17th century, ice cream was made with ambergris, a substance derived from whale excrement?

While ambergris has been highly prized in perfumery throughout history, recipes using the substance began to appear in cookbooks around 1660. This is when the infamous whale poop ice cream flavor was first created. Thankfully, we left this weird – and disgusting – trend behind and focused on creating easier and more delicious ice cream flavors.
