Ellen DeGeneres is a famous TV personality and actress. You probably know her as Dory from Pixar’s hit movie Finding Nemo (and its sequel Finding Dory, where she played the titular character), the ditzy blue tang fish with memory problems and a heart of gold.

But interestingly, she is older than Alaska and Hawaii’s statehood in the United States. She was born in 1958, while both Hawaii and Alaska would not officially become states with full rights until 1959. Before that, they were simply US territories, and the locals who lived there did not have citizenship rights.
