31. An Uncomfortable Parallel
This took a bit of a dark turn, but just goes to show how distance can disguise all sorts of things. In May 1940, just a few days after McDonald’s’ debut as a restaurant in California, one of the darkest chains of events of history was beginning over in Europe.

The first prisoners would be arriving in Auschwitz, just as some of the first customers were coming to McDonald’s’ DriveIn service. That’s a sobering thought that really puts a lot into perspective.
