#23: The Day Baseball Lost a Legend
Mickey Mantle passed away on August 13, 1995, at the age of 63, from liver cancer. His death sent shockwaves through the baseball world and beyond. Fans poured into Yankee Stadium and sent his family thousands of letters and flowers.

His funeral, held in Dallas, was attended by many of his former teammates and baseball legends, including Whitey Ford, Yogi Berra, and Joe DiMaggio. In his eulogy, sportscaster Bob Costas tearfully called Mantle “a fragile hero to whom we had an emotional attachment so strong and lasting, it defied logic.”
