#15: Retirement
Mickey Mantle officially retired on March 1, 1969, at 37. During his emotional retirement press conference, he humbly said, “I’m not going to play anymore. I just can’t hit the ball when I need to.” It was a bittersweet farewell. Though diminished physically, his legacy was fully intact.

Over 18 seasons, all with the Yankees, he amassed 536 home runs, three MVPs, and seven World Series titles. He had played through more injuries than most athletes could imagine and still became an icon. Baseball had lost one of its brightest stars, but his legacy endured.
