The Amphicar, dubbed an “Amphibious Car,” made its debut at the 1961 New York Auto Show. Manufactured in West Germany, it charmed buyers but barely made a splash, with only 4,000 units produced and lackluster performance on land and water.

Quickly falling out of favor, the Amphicar failed to excel as a car or a boat. High-end buyers initially intrigued, soon realized they were better off purchasing an actual boat, reflecting the novelty’s short-lived appeal.
