#3: Marriage to Andrew Stewart

While studying at Barnard College, Martha met Andrew Stewart, a law student. The couple married in 1961 and settled into life together, eventually having a daughter, Alexis. Their marriage gave Martha a stable foundation as she began exploring creative outlets.

The couple’s shared love for restoration and decor led them to purchase and renovate a historic farmhouse in Connecticut. This home became the iconic setting for many of Martha’s early projects and served as a laboratory for her ideas about domestic living.
