As Married… with Children’s original creative team developed the show’s tone and vision, they sought a simple yet powerful mission statement to capture its essence. Instead of words, they landed on something far more fitting—a sound.

Their choice? A flushing toilet. It was the first sound heard in the series and became an unmistakable trope throughout the show’s run. The not-so-subtle symbolism perfectly encapsulated the Bundys’ world—one where dignity, fortune, and good luck were constantly going down the drain.
