15. Woolworth’s Lunch Counter

Woolworth’s Lunch Counter was the site of the famous protest on February 1, 1960, when four African-American students sat down at a counter in Woolworth’s Department Store in North Carolina and politely asked to be served. At the time, segregation was still heavily practiced there. They remained at the lunch counter despite being refused service, heckled, and harassed until the end of the day.

Woolworths, as it was known, vanished in the 1990s, though the company did sell off some branches to what would later become known as “Foot Locker.”  There is one separate Lunch Counter in Bakersfield, California, renamed “Woolworth’s Diner.”
