#32: The Rise of Tang
Emerging in the late ’50s, Tang only soared in popularity after astronaut John Glenn carried it into space in 1962. This celestial endorsement significantly boosted its sales for Kraft Heinz, despite astronauts’ mixed feelings about its flavor. The novelty of its space journey made Tang a commercial success, transcending its taste.

William Mitchell, Tang’s inventor, was also the brilliant mind behind Cool Whip, Pop Rocks, and other convenience foods. In the 1970s, having a Tang supply in the pantry was almost mandatory. It became a symbol of hospitality, ready to be served to visitors at a moment’s notice, reflecting its significant cultural impact.
