#3: “He’s dead, Jim”
Trekkies unite! While you’ll undoubtedly recognize this otherworldly formation from the original Star Trek series, that’s not the only show or film it’s been in. These are the Vasquez Rocks featured in everything from the 1954 film Apache to the 2001 film Joe Dirt. They even had a moment in the Disney film Cars!

What makes them so popular? For one, they’re in a remote location that’s easy access for Hollywood: the Sierra Pelona Mountains are situated in the north of Los Angeles County, California. Two, they make an ideal setting for everything from desert montage to alien scenery. You can go there yourself and check them out! Just take ample amounts of water!
