As Monroe’s career progressed, Lytess remained a constant presence, guiding her through numerous roles and helping her refine her performances. Their bond was so intense that Monroe would refuse to film scenes without Lytess present.

Monroe’s dependence on Lytess intensified even more when she moved into Lytess’s home to prepare for her upcoming film, Don’t Bother to Knock. Even as the true nature of their relationship was unclear, Lytess used to be very hostile to Monroe’s male partners, specifically Joe DiMaggio.
