Complex Words

Here’s another example of an attorney using complicated vocabulary in order to try and confuse the witness. “Pursuant?” “Deposition notice?” Just say it simply, or don’t say it at all! However, it’s not these words that confused the witness. Instead, it’s the double meaning of “appearance” which tripped them up.

Most attorneys will recommend their clients follow the rule of KISS when going to court, which stands for Keep It Simple and Sedate. This is usually applied just for clothing to ensure that the clients appear professional. Still, perhaps it should be used for a lawyer’s use of language as well!
