#23: This Is Why You Always Have a Spare

You ever notice that you hear about small plane crashes way more than you hear about big plane crashes? There are a whole lot of reasons for this (including, I suspect, the fact that beginners fly small planes, so if they crash because of their lack of experience, of course, the plane they’re crashing is a small plane).

But there’s also the fact that small planes often only have one engine, so if something happens to it midflight… well, you are coming out of the sky, and you’re doing so right now. Larger planes, however, have two or even four engines, so if one has issues, you should have no problem landing safely on the remaining engines.
