Since Jackie Kennedy’s time, US First Ladies have had a fashion standard to uphold. They are often criticized for outfit repetition. Contrary to popular belief, they must purchase their own clothing without any special allowance.

While attending official White House events, First Ladies can accept clothing from designers as gifts, but these must be officially recorded and approved. This is the sole exception to their self-funded wardrobe protocol.
