Over half of America’s population seems to follow the call of the sea, setting up camp where the waves can lull them to sleep. A stone’s throw from the beach, and you’re likely to hit a resident’s house. With such a coastal crowd, it’s a wonder the country doesn’t tip over.

This sandy statistic paints a picture of a nation clinging to the edges, perhaps hoping for a glimpse of a dolphin over the morning brew. It’s the land of the free, where freedom apparently includes quick access to beach volleyball and the ability to complain about tourists.
