Wisconsin – Large Mammals
You know, the CDC has a peculiar fondness for the ambiguous term “large mammal” when it comes to animal-caused fatalities. It’s a bit of a mystery in Wisconsin, but I’m willing to bet they’re referring to deer. After all, bears, wolves, and cougars aren’t exactly known for their people-attacking tendencies in the state. But deer? They’re sneaky culprits, causing roughly nine fatalities in 2017 due to car accidents. Hot on their heels, though, is the mosquito, which is suspected of causing four deaths that same year.

In an unexpected plot twist, all four individuals tested positive for the notorious West Nile virus. This notorious villain is a mosquito-borne scourge that, despite our best efforts, still manages to claim hundreds of lives annually. It’s a chilling reminder that even in our modern world, nature’s tiny terrors continue to pose a significant threat.
