#26: What a Coincidence
I swear this is why pork isn’t called “pig”, and beef isn’t called “cow”. Even venison can’t automatically be pegged as a cute deer. But wait, why didn’t chicken get its own fancy name? Duck didn’t either… I’m sensing a theme here. Fish are fish; quail are quail. It’s the mammals that get special treatment! Even bear meat is called venison on occasion.

It turns out that meats like beef, pork, venison, and veal were all eaten by notability and therefore got fancy French names, whereas chicken was for the peasants in olden times. History aside, hopefully, the Average Dad’s kid doesn’t own a chicken for a pet. Either way, one day she’s bound to find out the truth, and it looks like this day is getting closer…
