Mourning Traditions

It’s interesting how different come customs can be across the world. For example, in the U.S., after a loved one dies, it’s common for most people to wear black. However, in India, they often have opposite traditions when it comes to attire for mourning and celebrating life’s biggest milestones. Brides often wear saffron red rather than white.

Red represents life and fertility, so they wouldn’t wear red at all after someone passes. Instead, a widow will wear white in mourning, while a widower often adorns a white turban. White signifies peace and purity, with a somber undertone to demonstrate respect for their relationship with the dead. It’s an important difference to remember while comingling across cultures.
