#75: A Gothic Christmas
American Gothic, the 1930 painting by painter Grant Wood, is one of the most iconic paintings in American culture. While most people believe the figures in the painting are a father and his daughters, the characters are actually portraits of Wood’s sister and the family dentist, and they’re supposed to represent an American couple living in the country.

We’re not sure why this couple decided to depict the famous painting in their Christmas card, but we’ve learned by now not to ask too many questions. Perhaps it’s an artistic statement about the grim expressions of the characters in the painting – “Smile, it’s Christmas!”
