#12: Aye, Scurvy
Scurvy—the pirate-era nightmare that somehow found its way into childhood health anxieties. The fear of suddenly losing teeth and developing mysterious bruises from lacking vitamin C felt entirely possible, especially if you skipped orange juice for a few days.

It didn’t matter that you weren’t sailing the high seas or surviving on hardtack and salted meat; the threat felt real. Maybe it was the dramatized school lessons or those terrifying diagrams in health class. Either way, the idea stuck.
