#19: The Case of Sarah Ware
Where? Maine
When? 1898
In 1898, the small town of Bucksport, Maine, was rocked by a gruesome discovery. Fifty-two-year-old Sarah Ware had vanished for two weeks before her brutally beaten corpse was found hidden in a wooded area. The prime suspect, a local neighbor, was acquitted after the bloody hammer, the supposed murder weapon, mysteriously vanished.

To this day, the unresolved case casts a shadow over Bucksport, not only due to the killer’s elusion but also due to the peculiar final resting place of Ware’s remains: her head and body lie in separate graves, unmarked by any gravestone.
