42nd Place – New Mexico
Despite its magical moniker as the Land of Enchantment, New Mexico has been under a less-than-spellbinding spell when it comes to education. The state found itself languishing in the 42nd spot in WalletHub’s education rankings. Even more disheartening, when it came to schooling, it was given the dubious honor of being dead last at 50th place.

New Mexico seems to be having a bit of a rough time according to numerous reports. WalletHub didn’t pull any punches, ranking it close to the bottom for public education. Education Week echoed this sentiment, placing it second to last. But the real kicker? The 2019 Kids Count Data Book declared it the absolute worst state for kids, citing safety, healthcare, and yep, you guessed it – education. It seems New Mexico has some homework to do!
