Don’t feel too bad, Sonja. I don’t know Italian either and would have been just as confused and cheerful about it, though I’d have nodded mutely so as not to make a misstep. For those like Sonja and me, let me save you the Google search. Buon Appetito means “Enjoy your meal.” That makes a lot more sense in the context.

Upon further thought, I’d have said, “Yes, please!” I love potatoes, and Italians love to smother them in garlic, paprika, butter, and Parmesan cheese. That sounds amazing. Perhaps Sonja needs to live a little and give in to a few delicious desires. Potatoes are the lumpy food stones of the culinary world and deserve the utmost respect.
